A moulding store in Dublin has sold out of mouldings because of mould contamination, as the company behind the original Bosco mouldings prepares to close.
Broscom said it was closing its Cork-based manufacturing plant on Wednesday, citing a lack of funding for the business and other issues.
Bosco moulds were launched in the 1920s and became popular in the 1950s as a quick-drying, easy-to-clean, safe and effective product.
They were also used in kitchens and kitchens were built to mould, according to a press release.
“In the last three years we have been forced to make difficult decisions and we have taken a number of steps in the process to reduce costs and improve efficiency,” the company said.
“This is not the case anymore.”
Broscos, based in Cork, said it had been running its Cork plant at Larkhill in the town of Cork since August and would be closing it in March.
Its closure is expected to cost €500,000 in lost sales and another €1.8m in lost productivity.
The company said it is also considering other locations in Ireland and will report the situation to the regulator and the Competition and Markets Authority.
Bruno de Valk, chairman of the council that owns Larkillys, said: “It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing this decision.
“It will take some time for us to make an informed decision and to fully understand what impact this has on the local community.””
Broscon has always been committed to serving the community in Cork and will continue to do so.””

“Mr de Valker said he was keen to find a new business model for the company.”
We are determined to ensure we keep doing the right thing for our members, and we will be working closely together to do this.
“I will be talking to the Cork County Council and the Cork City Council about this very important issue.”
A spokesperson for Boscon said it will make an announcement soon.
