Edmonton city council has approved the construction of two new high-rise office buildings on the former West Edmonton Station site.
The buildings will be located on the north side of the station, and will house more than 40 employees.
The building will be built on the land previously occupied by the former St. Albert railway station, with a total area of 5,700 square metres.
It will include a total of 11 floors, and five parking levels.
The design is being built by The Artisan Properties of Canada.
It was approved on Wednesday by the City of Edmonton’s Planning and Development Committee.
It’s expected to open in 2019.
The West Edmonton Tower, originally scheduled to open this spring, was delayed due to a lack of funding.
Edmonton city councillors said the delays were caused by the economic downturn and the impact on the city.
They say the two towers will be a catalyst for revitalization and economic development in the downtown area.
They also say it will contribute to the city’s long-term economic development plan.
